The shepherds hut is situated in a quiet corner of the WILD FLOWER MEADOW behind our centuries. We are based just outside South Molton within the beautiful North Devon countryside at the ‘Gateway of Exmoor.’

The space
The Shepherd’s hut has a comfy double mattress on a raised platform, with storage space underneath. An authentic woodburning stove which makes the hut lovely and cosy in the evenings! We provide guests with everything they need for the fire (lighters, kindling, and logs) and we can of course show you how to get it going. There is a small table and chairs in case you want to eat inside.
The hot shower and compost toilet are housed separately, approx. 10 metres behind the hut. Cooking facilities are in a wooden summerhouse, and include a rustic table, chairs, pots & pans, utensils, and a two burner gas stove with small grill. There is also a barbecue.
There is a chimenea to keep you warm if you are dining al fresco or sitting out under the stars – we are only a few miles from Exmoor National Park, Europe’s First Dark Sky Reserve, and on a clear night the stars are simply stunning.
Waiting for you on arrival will be a cool box full of goodies for you to make your own breakfast. This includes homemade spelt bread, fresh eggs from our chickens, homemade jam and marmalade, cereal, milk, bacon, mushrooms, tea and coffee. The ice blocks can be exchanged daily in the cool box with fresh ones from the house.
The site is totally off grid allowing you to switch off and getaway from it all. Don’t worry though, we have plenty of torches, solar lamps to light your way to the shower and loo, and gas lamps in the catering tent. It is a 75 metre walk up the grass track from the parking area to the hut. We are also happy for guests to pitch a tent for their children close to the Shepherd’s hut for an additional £7.50 per child.
It’s a good idea to arrive before dark so that you can get your bearings, and we recommend you bring wellies!
The area
Within an hours drive you can be at some of the country’s most stunning award winning leisure beaches such as Saunton Sands, Woolacombe Bay and Croyde. Here you can enjoy a variety of fun activities such as surfing, kiteboarding, swimming/snorkelling, walking and much more.
Cyclists are privileged here in North Devon to have the Tarka Trail. The southern loop incorporates the longest, continuous off road cycle path in the UK. Bikes can be hired at Braunton, Barnstaple and Bideford.
For walkers there are limitless opportunities on the coastal footpaths, two moors way, or Dunkery Beacon to see fantastic views and native local wildlife such as Exmoor ponies, wild deer, and birds.
We are approximately 3 miles away from the market town of South Molton which in itself is a hidden gem. On Thursdays and Saturdays you can find a bustling pannier market selling good quality local produce and crafts. There is a selection of independent shops selling a range of antiques, clothing, vintage, as well as an award winning delicatessen, and two local butchers. Also, the famous Corn Dolly tea shop and the Mediterranean cafe/restaurant Zest.
